Suicide prevention

A pioneering service, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, alongside those who need it most.

A pioneering service in Catalonia

The first 24/7 active telephone for suicide prevention

Since the summer of 2020, Esperança en Línia has managed the first suicide prevention hotline that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This device has answered more than 20,000 calls and is the first step in a deep and sustained commitment.

The reality of suicide in Catalonia

An invisible chakra

Every day in Catalonia:

  • 2 people die by suicide
  • 11 more make an attempt

In addition, the number of cases of self-harm is increasing, especially among adolescents and young people. These are preventable deaths and it is urgent to act.

Beyond the phone

Although the 24/7 telephone is the most visible pillar of our service, suicide prevention requires a much broader and sustained response. At Esperança en Línia we understand this task as a cross-cutting task, which includes both immediate attention to people in crisis such as social awareness and trainingWe work to break the silence and combat the stigma surrounding suicide, also offering support to survivors, those who have lost someone close to them, and generating spaces of recognition and shared support.

In addition, we promote training actions aimed at professionals who, in their day-to-day lives, can detect warning signs and intervene preventively. We are talking about healthcare personnel, teachers, members of the emergency services and community agents, who, with the right tools and preparation, can become a key player in saving lives and contributing to a more aware and prepared society.
